When established
in October 2002, the Mangal Ilona
Sertéshizlalda Ltd. set the objective
of achieving a market leader position
in the breeding and growing of mangalica,
an indigenous pig species in Hungary.
The family b usiness
was founded with a capital of HUF
20 million, and began operation with
137 sows and 2 male pigs.
Thanks to the stock
development in the almost two years
that have passed since then, currently
we have nearly 500 sows and 40 males,
including the brood piglets due for
service soon. This makes the company
the largest full-blood mangalica breeding
venture in Hungary, and a dominant
player on the Hungarian pork market
that owns and purchases some 10,000
porkers annually.
The Mangal Ilona
Sertéshizlalda Ltd. operates on a
total manor area of 70,000 square
metres, where it has some 7,000 sq.
m of technologically equipped animal-keeping
buildings, and warehousing facilities.
Today, 65-70 per cent of the fodder
required for feeding the animals is
grown on the roughly 220 hectares
of land that the company owns. In
a recent development project we started
to distribute a mangalica product
line branded as Mangold. Production
of the goods is subcontracted to the
Hunnia Húsipari Ltd. The owner and the distributor
of the
products is Mangal Ilona Ltd. The
Mangold products are widely available
in
Hungary, ranging from international
food store chains to independent retailers.
We are present on the shelves of Cora, SPAR, INTERSPAR, KAISER'S, TESCO
and AUCHAN, just like on the markets
and food halls in Budapest.
Although the full-scale
vertical production, which implies
that we feed the animals that we breed
with fodder that we grow, and then
have the pigs slaughtered and processed,
is extremely costly, we think that
this is the only solution if we are
to satisfy the growing quality requirements
of the consumers. The company always
aspires for perfectionism,which we
would not abandon under any circumstances.
This devotion determines the
produc tion
process and the packaging designs,
and just as our appearance probably
meets European standards, I daresay
that our products are of the same
high quality. I think the combination
of home-made recipes and an appropriate
technology with the facilities that
are indispensable for healthy and
civilised animal husbandry makes it
possible to turn out products that
deserve unanimous recognition.
Today, the healthy
character of products that are made
from mangalica pork is no more seriously
disputed. In contrast with the heavy
cholesterol in white pigs, the light
cholesterol in mangalica does not
harm health at all; in fact it has
medicina l
powers. The meat and the bacon are
proven to be beneficial for gout.
The consumption of lard is possibly
even healthier than that of cold pressed
olive oil. However, while these facts
are fairly well-known in Hungary,
mangalica products are not easily
and widely available. We are determined
that we will mainly provide the Hungarian
customers with the products that are
made from this out-and-out Hungarian
pig species.
